Title: Vitamin D status of Arab mothers and infants
Author(s): Adekunle Dawodu
Source: Journal of the Arab Neonatology Forum year 2004,vol 1 issue 1,

Abstract: Owing to increasing reports of vitamin D deficiency rickets among minority groups1,2,3 and the high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in adults, especially in the United States and Canada,4,5 reports of studies on vitamin D in the last decade had focused on these Western countries. In addition to metabolic bone disease, recent studies suggest that vitamin D deficiency could increase the risk of certain cancers, heart disease and autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis in adults and type 1 diabetes mellitus in children.6 Many recent reviews and editorials have, therefore, focused mainly on the vitamin D status of European and North American adults..
